Here’s a quick, non-intimidating strength workout that’s based on one of our most popular beginner classes.

The Whole-Body Wellness Challenge is rooted in the understanding that health isn’t just about fitness. This month, we’re sharing fun and easy ways to bring everything you love about SilverSneakers classes and your time at the gym to other areas of your life. You’ll find workouts, tips, and activities to help you build strength, eat healthier, sleep sounder, and be more present in your life so you can feel good—body, mind, and spirit. 

 

Think you have to be “in shape” to join a SilverSneakers workout? That couldn’t be further from the truth. All fitness levels are welcome! Our expert instructors know how to make exercise safe and fun. And they are masters at helping you tailor moves to suit your needs.     

Don’t believe us? We’ll prove it to you with a taste of one of our most popular beginner classes: SilverSneakers Classic. In this 10-minute mini-class, SilverSneakers instructor Shannon will guide you through a gentle warmup, followed by some joint-friendly cardio and strength moves that can be done either sitting or standing.   

About SilverSneakers Classic 

Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned gym goer, you’ll benefit from these strength moves. “Each class is focused on increasing your range of movement so that you can be better prepared for whatever life throws your way,” says Shannon.   

That versatility also means you can tailor the moves to best fit your needs. You can use a sturdy chair for seated moves, standing support, or even try hands-free movements. When you join us for an in-person SilverSneakers Classic class, you’ll also have the option to use handheld weights, elastic bands, or a soft ball to build strength.  

What if you want to join us for a SilverSneakers LIVE online class and don’t have this equipment? “You can use whatever you have at home, like water bottles, or just your own body’s resistance,” says Shannon.   

How to Do the 10-Minute SilverSneakers Classic Workout 

For this mini class, you’ll need a sturdy chair, open floor space, and handheld weights if you have them.

When you’re ready, press play on the video above and follow along. You’ll start with some gentle moves to warmup the muscles that you’ll be using during class. And then you’ll alternate simple cardio moves with strength-building exercises that will leave you feeling energized and strong.  

Follow Shannon’s cues for how to make each move easier—or more of a challenge. “Only work at a pace that’s right for you,” Shannon says. “As long as you’re doing the best you can, it’s all good!”  

As always, safety is key. The exercises here may be different or more advanced than your regular SilverSneakers class. If you have a chronic condition, an injury, or balance issues, talk to your doctor about how you can exercise safely.
